Tytherington Population

Up to 1800, there are only estimates; some include Itchington, some exclude it.
1086 (Domesday Survey): perhaps between 25 and 40 in Tytherington. 1300 : England's population peaked.
1327 (Subsidy Roll): 28 active property owning men in Tytherington. 1348/9 (Black Death): massive decrease in population.
1554 (Customary Tenants): 44 persons paid rent to the Lord of the Manor.
1608 (Men and Armour): whole parish, 78 active men. 1712 (Atkyns): estimate of total population 320.
1775 (Rudder) ditto 310.
1790 (Vicar) ditto 328.
1801 (Census): whole parish 368.

Then from 1811 to 1901 the censuses showed that the population varied between 441 (in 1811 and 1901) and 496 (in 1841), with the exceptional year of 1871 when the population of 523 was swollen by those engaged in constructing the railway. 515 people were recorded in 1931, fifty years later in 1981 the number was 527.
Around 1750, when Tytherington parish's population was something over 300, Rangeworthy had 140, Charfield 150, Cromhall 200, Tortworth 240, Chipping Sodbury 1200, Thornbury 1800 and WottonŽunder-Edge 4000.
