An Oral History of Tytherington

In the late 1980's and early 1990's the Tytherington Local History Group undertook a project to record personal interviews with older villagers about their life and times in the village.  The recordings also include group discussions on particular topics.  It was thought to be important that the memories of these folk of a time long passed should not be forgotten.  The recordings are listed below and are available on loan from Thornbury Library.  Each comes in a pack including a cassette tape and a written transcription in a booklet.

 

  1. Memories of Alsey Curtis of Tytherington (Part 1):-   Born in 1898 Alsey was regularly caned at school by the headmaster but rose to become the chauffeur for the Lord of the Manor, Squire Hardwicke.  His memories of his life in the village are fascinating!

  3. The Life and Memories of Wilf Humphries:-  Born in 1923 at Tower Hill Farm Wilf played a big part in village life particularly the annual Tytherington Pantomime organised by The Churpels.
  4. Memories of Dennis Skuse of Tytherington:- Born in the village in 1908 he remembers his time in the village school, the First and Second World Wars, farming life and the quarries.
  5. The Farming Panel:- Recorded in 1989 three Tytherington farmers, Bob Hetherton (Balmersland Farm) , Bob Williams (Brook Farm) and Bill Cornock (New House Farm) talk about the changes they have seen in farming over the years.
  6. Tytherington's War:-  A panel of villagers who lived in the village during the Second World War discuss what happened and how their lives were affected.
  7. Mapping the War:-  A panel of villagers discuss how Tytherington was geared up for the war.  The accompanying booklet includes a map of where bombs landed, planes crashed, and gun enplacements could be found.
  8. A History of Sport in Tytherington:- Recorded in 1989 Villagers discuss football, tennis and cricket amongst other activities.  They remember the football team using the skittle alley in the Swan as their changing rooms, and the whole team using a small tin bath to clean up after the game!
  9. Local Dialect - "Oonty Tumps":-  Eight villagers talk about local names, language and recall favourite stories.
  10. A Walk Under The Hill:- Recorded in 1988 a group walk along Baden Hill Road, Tytherington, discuss what they see, how things have changed and describe buildings and places of interest enroute.
