After the First World War a collection was made for a war memorial.  In all £68-6s-0d was raised, with the Lord of the Manor Squire Hardwicke Lloyd Hardwicke donating £5, as did the vicar and Charles Fry, landlord of the Swan Inn.  Headmaster of Tytherington School, Mr James Hemmingway donated £2.  However, as you can see from the original notes below, for various reasons not all villagers were happy about donating and many could not afford to.
